With winter upon us, that unfortunately, means cold and flu season is also here! As much as we try to prevent our children from catching germs, the truth is we can’t always stop it. It seems like everyone right now is either sick, was sick or knows someone who is sick. And our little munchkins are no exception right now. I’m thankful it’s just a cold and not the Norovirus going around. As a Mom or Dad it’s always so hard watching little ones battle a cold or fever. Whenever our kids get sick, I have my go-to arsenal of cold remedies to help shorten their colds and offer some relief. All of the following products and hacks are the best cold remedies for babies & toddlers that we use, love and highly recommend!
Okay hear me out on this one before you run away grossed out. When you have a baby who can’t blow their nose yet, they won’t eat and can’t sleep because they can’t breath. You’ll do whatever you gotta do to help your baby! I remember getting so frustrated with the bulb syringes, because they suck.. at sucking boogies! I admit to totally boycotting this when our oldest was an infant. Because come on.. it’s gross right? Well when I finally caved and bought it with our youngest, I fell in love! It was amazing! And I was kicking myself for not buying the Nosefrida sooner! It’s so easy, way faster and more effective then other methods and don’t worry, you won’t be snacking on boogies.
If your child is old enough to blow their noses, you will be going through a lot of tissues! Which quickly dries out their cute little noses, making it and the surrounding skin very sensitive. We always have three or four boxes of these Tissues with Lotion around our house. They really do make a huge difference vs the ordinary tissues. And trust me, when do they (cause they will) refuse to get their nose blown again you’ll really wish you had those stocked in the house and…
These are great for cold and flu season because they contain the same amount of saline that naturally occurs in the body. Plus they help moisturize with Aloe, Chamomile, and Vitamin E which makes them extra soft! I love having a pack of these in our car for wiping sensitive little faces. And in the house paired with tissues with lotion for maximum comfort. Plus these grape ones smell amazing!
During winter the air around here gets so dry. Having a cool mist humidifier in our house helps add moisture back into the air. Which not only helps alleviate dry skin, chapped lips and dry nasal passages. It also eases coughing and congestion. Cool-mist and warm-mist humidifiers are equally effective in humidifying the air. But when it comes to having one around kids, cool-mist is the way to go! Because warm-mist ones have the potential to burn from the steam and water inside, if a child gets too close or spills it on themselves. We use this cool-mist humidifier in each of the bedrooms, its great for small rooms and we love that you can also add essential oils to the water (optional). And in our main living area we have this larger 5 in 1 version. Which we love, because it also helps purify the air.
According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Wellness, over 200 viruses have been linked to the common cold. You can prepare by incorporating the use of essential oils into your natural health care routine. Using essential oils such as Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Sweet Orange and Thyme all help deter the growth of viruses. We bought this set of essential oils to go with our two diffusing humidifiers above. Our favorites are the Sweet Orange and Eucalyptus, they make our house small amazing!
We have a bad habit of misplacing these in our house! So we always try to keep a couple extras lying around. We tried the temporal ones before but I never could get an accurate reading. User error? Maybe. But when your baby is running a temp, the last thing you want is an unreliable thermometer. We have this ear thermometer which is so convenient and more accurate compared to the forehead one we used before. And it’s really quick at reading, we always get a temp under 5 seconds. We also have a standard one, similar to this one.
Hydration is so important, especially when they’re sick. In addition to water, juice is another easy addition. Giving our kids juice isn’t a daily occurrence here because of all the sugar found inside typical juices. But when we do give them juice, we love Honest juice. Not only is it organic, but it contains vitamin C and is only sweetened by the fruit itself. I typically buy it by the jug in the kiddos favorite flavors, like grape and berry berry good lemonade. But we also love the convenience of the pouches.
I think everyone knows what vicks vapor rub is. It was something I remember using growing up, when I was sick. While searching for some a couple years ago I stumbled across this kid alternative that we fell in love with! It’s the Kids Cherry Mentholatum, with 100% natural ingredients, it’s great at reducing and relieving coughs. I like to rub it over their chest and under their feet (followed with socks). It works wonders, trust me! When Faith woke up the next day after doing those, she was so happy from getting such a good nights sleep. And her room smelled amazing the next morning.
I’m always hesitant to give our babies meds. But when the fever does hit, having a fever & pain reliever can come in handy. I like these two for a paraben, dye and gluten free option. They help reduce fevers and relieve minor aches and pains from common colds, flu, sore throat, headache and toothaches. You can refer to this dosage chart by age and weight. Please make sure to ALWAYS consult your pediatrician before giving your children medicine.
We love using saline drops as a quick, effective and non medicated form of congestion relief. I have them lie down on theirs backs and place a few of these Saline Drops in each nostril. After a min or two I have them blow or use the Nosefrida to finish clearing their noses. It helps by loosing up the mucus with moisture, allowing the nose to be cleared easier.
By placing 2 cups of Epson Salt in a warm bath, it can help sooth the body, mind and soul. Also it can help detox the body and open up air passages, making it easier to breath.

Consult Your Pediatrician: I always call our kids Pediatrician if I have any questions or I need some advice on treatments and medicines. I like the peace of mind that I’m doing everything right and I’m not missing any red flags. Always make sure to consult a doctor before giving a baby or child any medicine.
Plenty of Rest: When we give extra time for our bodies to rest during sickness, we are allowing our body to natural fight off infections.
Extra TLC: It’s no fun to feel crummy. My heart melts looking into those watery sick eyes. I can’t help but add extra snuggles and comfort to their days. Plus our kiddos can’t refuse any tending loving care from their Mom and Dad!
Lots of Fluids: Encouraging extra fluids is a great way to stay hydrated. Plus it flushes out toxins and other bad things attacking your immune system. Alexander loves Coconut water (I can’t believe these are under $1 each! At the store, I usually spend $2 per bottle). Faith is our picky eater, but if I get ones with fruit flavors, she likes it. After going through a million different toddler/kid friendly bottles (only a little dramatic). I landed on these kid bottles and haven’t turned back. They’re easy to clean. And besides the straw, all the pieces in the lid stay connected, so it makes losing pieces impossible.
Elevate Their Heads: Elevating their noggins during sleep (keeping head above heart) helps decrease the blood flow from pooling in the nose. Resulting in open nasal passages and better sleep.
There are the best cold remedies for babies & toddlers that we love, use and highly recommend! Hopefully you can try some of these and get through this cold and flu season a little happier and healthier 🙂
